More infos about P-40N #50 !

Recent EBAY find: Bill Harrell's P-40N burned down...

Happy New Year 2024 !

A new image of P-40N #65 appeared on the Remembering Shared Honor website. Anthony Arnone had previously sent me an image of that P-40N named "Queen ... ? ... "

We now can confirm that the name was "Queen Elizabeth", as the beginning of this name has been painted out on the other image, but the remaining letters read "...beth".

Now, to find a photo of the starboard side of that one ^^

89th Fighter Squadron members / EBAY find

Seen on Ebay, this vintage photograph of the 89th Fighter Squadron members, taken at Mitchell Field, early 1943, before their departure overseas.

P-40N-1 DIKAM DEATH illustration

Paru dans le "Le Fana de l'Aviation" d'Avril 2020, pour accompagner la maquette "cartoon" de Tiger Model.

Published in "Le Fana de l'Aviation" April issue. I opted for DIKAM DEATH displaying #11 on her tail, but new info seems to confirm tail #15 & s/n 42-105099.

J'avais opté pour le #11, mais les nouvelles infos semblent à la fois confirmer les souvenirs de Bob Gale et corroborer le #15 sur un P-40N posé en vrac par lui-même.

P-40N-1 DIKAM DEATH identification ?

From this Bernard Hoffman pic, we know that the tail number had to be #1...something.

Partant de cette image de Bernard Hoffman, on sait que le chiffre sur la dérive était compris entre #10 & #19. Let's see which ones can be ruled out: #10 stuck in the mud doesn't fit. #11 seen in flight from a poor video still could be. It also may be the P-40N hidden in the distance on a 88thFS dispersal area in the woods... #12 doesn't fit either from the 2 pics I have #13 & #14 have no skull painted #15 was supposed to be DIKAM DEATH, but some info published in a previous post seem to rule that one out, too: the checkers painted under Gale's left wingtip aren't visible BUT do appear on the right (starboard) wingtip of another P-40N parked just behind #15: how frustrating ! #16 is not Dikam Death either. Now, let's find pictures of #17, 18 & 19 !

#10 piégé par la boue n'est pas notre sujet. #11 pourrait convenir, mais la capture d'écran d'une vidéo couleurs est trop floue. Ce pourrait aussi être ce P-40N à nez blanc du 88thFS caché parmi les arbres... #12 ne peut convenir, au vu des 2 photos dont je dispose #13 & #14 n'ont pas de crâne sur les images dispos. #15 était supposé être DIKAM DEATH, mais en examinant des imagesd'un post précédent il semble qu'il faille rayer aussi celui-là: le damier N&B peint sous le bout de l'aile du P-40N de Bob Gale n'est pas visible MAIS apparait derrière la dérive du #15, sur l'extrémité de l'intrados droit d'un second P-40 parqué derrière lui ! Frustrant ! #16 n'est pas non plus Dikam Death. Il ne reste plus qu'à trouver des images des P-40N #17, 18 & 19 ! Une planche de decals existe pour un gros P-40N radio-commandé, mais pourquoi l'ont-ils identifié comme étant #12 ?? Le P-40N #19 figure dans cet alignement. Mark Joyce a aussi terminé la déco de son P-40N-1/P-40M piloté par Bob Gale: DIKAM DEATH ! Bravo à lui !

C-46 & 88th FS P-40Ns at Myitkyina

Some 88thFS P-40Ns can be seen, and the first one appears to have a name painted on it. A better rez & uncropped version can probably be found in a museum...

88thFS P-40Ns UPDATE !

An old picture, from the Owen Allred collection, had revealed an interesting feature: checkered wingtip on a P-40N displaying also an unidentified artwork on the wheel hubs.

Des P-40N du 88thFS dispersés dans une clairière (coll. Owen Allred) révèlent un détail intéressant: un damier n&b sous l'extrémité du bout d'aile. En examinant un agrandissement d'un alignement de P-40N de cette escadrille, (à Nagaghuli, le 5 Mai 1944) on remarque un damier également peint au même endroit sur le P-40N "Dikam Death" de Bob Gale ! Ça n'est visiblement pas la même machine vue dans la forêt, mais probablement la marque d'un des "flights" du 88th FS.

Close exam of a 88thFS P-40N line-up at Nagaghuli, on May,5 1944, reveals that "Dikam Death" flown by Bob Gale (see former post about him) also displays the same (flight ?) markings ! Next to Bob Gale's P-40N, we can now identify P-40N #27, on another line-up picture, posted some time ago.

Le P-40N #27 peut maintenant être identifié également sur cet autre cliché d'un alignement de P-40s du 88thFS, grâce à la pin-up collée près de la mâchoire du crâne.

En attendant un article sur les "Thunderbolt" du 90th Fighter Squadron, à paraître dans le magazine "Aero Journal" #63 de Février 2018, il est temps de vous souhaiter une bonne fin d'année 2017 !

Ce P-47 "Ready ...dy", dont l'identité reste un mystère, est prêt à délivrer un cadeau offert par la 10th Air Force. Ho ! Ho ! Ho !

En bonus, cette photo fournie récemment par le petit-fils du Col. Sydney "Rosie" Grubbs, montrant le P-47D de son grand-père après qu'il ait heurté un arbre, au retour d'une mission de bombardement ! À suivre, en 2018 !!

2Lt Joseph B Patton 90th FS (killed July, 15th 1944)

2Lt Joseph "Joe" Patton flew P-40N named "(the) Steamin Demon".

Cet agrandissement permet d'identifier le #79 "Steamin Demon" parmi l'alignement de P-40N-1 du 90thFS. Un témoignage affirmait que le nom porté par ce P-40N était "Screamin Demon" mais il s'agit bien de STEAMIN. Le crâne est barbouillé de gris sale (ou de rouge !) et le trait noir est moins épais que celui porté par le P-40N #76 "SNAG".

Here is the proof that the name was indeed "STEAMIN DEMON" (thanks to Mirek Karnik, from Rising Decals company !)

P-40N #79 again, taking-off (via Robin Adair)

P-40N #79 displayed the "Boxing Bunny" 90thFS emblem on her rudder.

Le "lapin boxeur" du 90th FS était visible sur le sommet de la dérive de certains P-40 et plus tard sous le cockpit de quelques P-47 de la 90éme Escadrille.

Joseph B Patton trouva la mort le 15 Juillet 44, lors du crash de son P-47D dans les Naga Hills. Joseph B Patton was killed when he tried to pull up to miss one of the Naga Hills and his P-47D stalled.
